Temperature is one of the most overlooked factors when selecting and maintaining industrial hose assemblies. While pressure, application, and chemical compatibility are often top considerations, temperature can have a significant impact on hose performance, coupling retention, gasket function, and overall service life.

Industrial hose assemblies may be exposed to a wide range of temperatures during operation. The temperature of the conveyed media, changes in ambient conditions, and repeated heating and cooling cycles can all affect the materials within a hose assembly. Understanding how temperature influences these components can help prevent premature wear, leaks, and unexpected failures.

### How Temperature Affects Hose Materials

Hose materials are designed to perform within specific temperature ranges. When exposed to temperatures outside of those limits, the physical properties of the hose can change, affecting flexibility, strength, and durability.

#### Thermal Expansion and Contraction

Like many materials, hose components expand when heated and contract when cooled. These dimensional changes may seem minor, but repeated expansion and contraction can affect the relationship between the hose and coupling.

Temperature fluctuations can cause the hose tube, reinforcement layers, and cover materials to expand and contract at different rates. Over time, repeated thermal cycling can contribute to material fatigue and may impact the connection between the hose and coupling.

#### Changes in Flexibility and Tensile Strength

Temperature also affects the mechanical properties of hose materials. Elevated temperatures can soften some materials, potentially reducing tensile strength and making them more susceptible to stretching or deformation. Cold temperatures can have the opposite effect, causing some materials to become stiff and less flexible.

A hose that performs well under normal conditions may behave differently when exposed to extreme temperatures. Reduced flexibility in cold environments can make a hose more difficult to handle and more vulnerable to cracking if bent or impacted. Excessive heat can accelerate aging and deterioration of certain materials.

#### Differences Between Hose Materials

Different hose materials respond differently to temperature changes:

- **Rubber hoses** typically provide excellent flexibility but may become softer at elevated temperatures and harder or less flexible in cold environments.
- **Thermoplastic hoses** can offer a wide range of temperature capabilities but may experience changes in flexibility and strength depending on the specific material.
- **Metal hoses** generally withstand higher temperatures but can still experience changes due to thermal expansion and contraction.

Selecting a hose material that is appropriate for the operating temperature is critical to maintaining performance and extending service life.

### How Temperature Affects Coupling Retention

Coupling retention refers to the ability of a coupling to remain securely attached to the hose throughout the life of the assembly. Temperature changes can affect this connection in several ways.

#### Elevated Temperatures and Reduced Retention

High temperatures can soften hose materials and cause them to lose some of their original strength and stiffness. This may reduce the ability of the hose to maintain a secure grip on the coupling.

Depending on the hose construction and coupling method, elevated temperatures can also affect clamp force or the interference between the hose and coupling. Over time, repeated exposure to high temperatures may contribute to movement between the hose and coupling, increasing the risk of separation.

#### Cold Temperatures and Brittleness

Low temperatures can create different challenges. Some hose materials become harder and less flexible in cold environments, which can reduce their ability to conform around the coupling.

A brittle hose may be more susceptible to cracking, especially when subjected to bending, vibration, or mechanical stress. Cold temperatures can also impact the grip between the hose and coupling by changing the physical properties of the hose material.

#### The Impact of Thermal Cycling

Applications that experience frequent temperature changes can be especially challenging. Outdoor hose assemblies, for example, may be exposed to daytime heating, nighttime cooling, seasonal changes, and temperature fluctuations during operation.

Repeated expansion and contraction can gradually affect hose and coupling performance. Proper hose selection, installation, and routine inspection are important steps in identifying potential issues before they lead to failure.

### Media Temperature vs. Ambient Temperature

When evaluating temperature requirements for a hose assembly, it is important to consider both the temperature of the environment and the temperature of the material being conveyed.

In many applications, the temperature of the media inside the hose is the more critical factor. A hose operating in a mild outdoor environment may still experience high temperatures if it is transporting hot fluids, steam, chemicals, or other heated materials.

However, ambient temperature should not be overlooked. Outdoor installations, exposure to direct sunlight, proximity to heat sources, or cold-weather operation can all influence hose performance.

The combined effects of media temperature and ambient temperature should be considered during hose selection. A hose assembly that is suitable for the media temperature alone may not perform as expected if the surrounding environment creates additional thermal stress.

### Temperature and Chemical Compatibility

Temperature is also an important consideration when evaluating chemical compatibility. A hose material that is compatible with a chemical at room temperature may not provide the same level of performance at elevated temperatures. Higher temperatures can accelerate chemical reactions and increase the rate at which chemicals interact with hose materials.

Exposure to incompatible chemicals can cause materials to swell, soften, harden, crack, or lose strength. These changes can affect both the hose and the coupling connection, potentially reducing retention and increasing the likelihood of failure. When selecting a hose assembly, always consider both the chemical being conveyed and the operating temperature.

### Don’t Overlook the Gasket

Gaskets are another important component affected by temperature. Many hose couplings rely on gaskets to create a reliable seal, and temperature extremes can impact gasket performance.

Elevated temperatures may cause some gasket materials to soften, swell, or lose their sealing properties over time. Cold temperatures can cause certain materials to become hard and less able to maintain a proper seal.

Choosing the right gasket material for the application, including the operating temperature and the media being conveyed, helps maintain connection integrity and prevent leaks.

### Best Practices for Maintaining Hose and Coupling Retention

Proper hose selection and maintenance are essential for maximizing the service life of an industrial hose assembly. Consider the following best practices:

- Use STAMPED when selecting hose assemblies
- Consider both media and ambient temperatures
- Verify chemical compatibility at the actual operating temperature
- Inspect hose assemblies regularly
- Replace assemblies showing signs of temperature-related damage
- Train personnel to recognize and address potential hose assembly hazards

#### Put Hose Assembly Safety into Practice

Temperature-related damage isn’t always easy to identify during routine inspections. Changes in flexibility, cracking, deformation, or other signs of deterioration can indicate that a hose assembly is no longer suitable for service. Proper training can help personnel recognize potential hazards and take corrective action before a failure occurs.

Dixon offers [On-Site Safety Training](https://dixonvalve.com/en/dixon-on-site-safety-training) to help facilities identify potential hose and coupling safety concerns. The program includes a visual inspection of hose assemblies and accessories by Dixon technicians, a confidential report with observations and recommendations, and a follow-up hands-on seminar addressing safety concerns identified during the inspection.

### Summary

Temperature plays a critical role in the performance and reliability of industrial hose assemblies. Changes in temperature can affect hose flexibility, material strength, chemical resistance, gasket performance, and coupling retention.

By considering operating temperature during hose selection, verifying chemical compatibility, and performing regular inspections, users can help ensure their hose assemblies perform reliably throughout their service life.
